I love to have a library full of books for my children, and my favorite way to find books is second hand. This might be off of Thrift Books, Amazon, local thrift stores, or library book sales. Recently we have had some time to browse through our local stores and have found some new favorites. I am going to share some of them with you today!

Animals at Home
This book is a Scholastic first discovery board book about pets. It includes information about dogs, cats, hamsters, fish, birds, turtles and rabbits. This book is more of a “reference” book for children, but my toddler loves it for the beautifully drawn pictures, and the side tabs (of course ;).

Each page offers many facts about the animal and how to care for them. Animals at Home can be found on Amazon and Thriftbooks.

Who Hid It?
This fun book by Tark Gomi is an interactive “find-it” style book that is great for toddlers (but older children love it also!). On each spread there is an image with the question of who hid that item in the image on the facing page.

It is a simple yet intruiging book that has kept us coming back again and again. The watercolor art in it is stunning, which makes it all the more enticing. Who Hid It? can be found on Amazon and Thriftbooks.

A Kiss Means I Love You
Babies and toddlers just love books with real pictures of humans in them, and this is one of those! The story by Kathryn Madeline Allen has photos of children doing an action and telling what that action means.

The emotions seen in the real photographs are what my toddler loves, and it is also a wonderful book to read before bed, as the end of the book is about hugging and kissing before bed. A Kiss Means I Love You can be found on Amazon and Thriftbooks.

Lightship
This book by Brian Floca is about a topic I have never heard of before: lightships. Very interesting information told in a lyrical way, it takes you inside a lightship where you meet the crew, including the ship’s cat!

The illustrations are beautiful and are often from a very unique point of view. I do have to warn, on one page a passing boat comes too close to the lightship, causing the man on board to have a talking bubble filled with symbols (@#%). This might be something your family wants to edit before reading. Lightship can be found on Amazon and Thriftbooks.

Gullywasher Gulch
A very fun book by Marianne Mitchell that has become my children’s favorite! The story tells of an old packrat and prospector, Ebenezer Overall, who ends up needing all the things he has stored away for a rainy day.

The illustrations make the story, with emotions that are clearly seen and felt. A warning that on one page (the one above actually!) the cloud “looks like it might want to set a spell”, so if your family is sensitive to magic, you may want to edit this page! Gullywasher Gulch can be found on Thriftbooks.

Kindle Me a Riddle
Roberta Karim takes us back to pioneer times in this wonderfully written book. Young Constance and her Pa try to stump each other with riddles that the whole family gets in on. I know my children love to try and solve them while we read!

This book teaches about pioneer ways of life in a fun and engaging way: through riddles. There is also a section at the back of the book that explains each riddle and the history of how things were made/done back then. Kindle Me a Riddle can be found on Thriftbooks.

Stranger in the Woods
The photographic story from Carl R. Sams II & Jean Stoick is maybe not exactly seasonally appropriate right now, but I just had to share about it! It is a sweet story about how the animals of the woods react to a stranger in the woods.

Each animal has it’s own unique way of speaking, making this a very fun read aloud. The photographs are what make this book truly special though, and one to have on the shelf for winter (or summer?!). Stranger in the Woods can be found on Amazon or Thriftbooks (I found mine on Thriftbooks, check below for a free book!).
Well, these are our favorites from what we have thrifted recently! Our family enjoys the hunt of finding good books just as much as reading them. Maybe next time I can take you thrifting with me?!
